St. Chad's Church - Stafford

Genealogy Index | Orme in Europe

Carved on the capital of the north-east pillar of the tower is the Latin inscription ORM VOCATUR QUE ME CONDIDIT, which is translated as "the man who established me is called Orm".

The Orme responsible for the building of this church was Orme of Darlaston (Orme le Guiden). We can be certain of this because he is the the only Orme in the area at the right time with the funds and resources to undertake the project. He also fits the local tradition that Orme built the church when he returned from the crusades.
